Notes

Note 61702: NOTE-Applies only on units (power packs) that convert AC source power into DC output power at voltages suitable for supplying an electronic device.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Measure each handling unit and calculate density to set class under Item 170. Example: 40x48x36 in at 300 lb ≈ 6.0 PCF (300 ÷ (40×48×36/1728)).
  2. Match packaging to component type: ESD foam for printed circuit boards and capacitors, wood crating or skids for long antennas/waveguides, blocking for heavy UPS units.
  3. Use the packaging called out by the item when applicable (e.g., NMFC Packages 829, 1241, 1273) and list it on the BOL to prevent reclass.
  4. If shipping chargers, UPS, or phone equipment with batteries, confirm they qualify as non-haz under 49 CFR exceptions and secure terminals; keep SDS/docs available.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Simplifies catalogs of mixed electronics—adapters, antennas, fans, UPS—under one density-based NMFC, speeding quotes and billing.
  • Density pricing can reward compact, heavy gear (e.g., UPS, capacitors) with lower classes and better LTL rates.
  • Using specified boxes, crates, or NMFC packages reduces inspection time, reclass fees, and claim risk.
  • Ability to palletize diverse SKUs on one freight class streamlines consolidation and cuts per-shipment overhead.
