Notes

Note 62416: NOTE-Shipper must certify on shipping orders and bills of lading at time of shipment the actual value per pound of the property. If the shipper fails to certify the actual value per pound, shipment will not be accepted, but if the shipment is inadvertently accepted, charges will initially be assessed on the basis of the class for the highest valuation provided. Upon proof of lower actual value, freight charges will be adjusted accordingly.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Describe on the BOL exactly as: Locks or Lock Systems, electrically operated, NOI, in boxes or crates, and note if shipped with accessorial equipment like power supplies, readers, or controllers.
  2. Use ESD-safe bags for keypads and control boards, then cushion maglocks and electric strikes with dense foam; choose double-wall cartons for kits and switch to a crate for heavy multi-unit shipments.
  3. Fasten hardware inside the package so housings and armatures cannot shift; for crate loads, brace units to blocking and mark orientation to prevent shear damage.
  4. Remove or ship any backup batteries separately per carrier policy; if included, declare them on paperwork to avoid delays and potential reclass.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Clear NOI coverage for locks with or without accessories reduces split line items and cuts reclass risk.
  • Non-hazardous designation streamlines paperwork and speeds tendering, improving dock-to-dock transit times.
  • Right-sized boxes or sturdy crates minimize concealed damage, reducing RMAs, replacements, and service dispatch costs.
  • Accurate NMFC reference improves quote consistency across carriers, helping control LTL rates and accessorial fees.
