How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm non-food use and specify packaging as box or crate, with or without skids. Example: ovens used for curing coatings or drying electronics assemblies.
- Immobilize emitters and racks, latch doors, and protect control panels. Use moisture barrier bags and antistatic wrap where sensitive electronics are present.
- Block and brace the chassis inside the box/crate, provide 4-way forklift access, mark center of gravity, and apply Do Not Stack plus tip-and-tell/shock indicators.
- At booking, disclose dimensions, weight, and photos. Request needed accessorials (liftgate, residential, inside delivery) and consider air-ride or blanket wrap for lab-grade units.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Item-specific NMFC for boxed/crated ovens reduces density disputes, cutting reclass fees and preventing rating delays.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and widens carrier options, often improving transit times and costs.
- Rigorous crating and labeling protect fragile IR emitters and controllers, lowering claims and production downtime.
- Clear packaging declaration (box vs crate, skid vs no skid) yields accurate quotes and predictable LTL freight rates.
