How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack shields per Package 2314 in rigid cartons with corner protection and dense foam blocking so thin mu‑metal parts cannot flex or deform in transit.
- Wrap each piece in VCI paper or a poly bag with desiccant to prevent surface oxidation, and keep away from speakers or magnets packed in the same shipment.
- On the BOL, describe exactly: “Shields, beam or internal magnetic, television picture tube, Package 2314,” select packaging as Packages, and request carrier class assignment if needed.
- For LTL, mark Do Not Bend and Magnetically Sensitive, avoid steel banding directly on cartons, and keep stack heights low to prevent distortion of formed shields.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC wording reduces reclass penalties and billing disputes for CRT refurbishers and electronics service centers.
- Proper packaging preserves precise geometry of magnetic shields, cutting claim risk and preventing costly performance issues after installation.
- Non-hazardous status and Packages format streamline LTL quotes and carrier acceptance, improving lead times and routing options.
- Compliance with Package 2314 builds carrier confidence, minimizing inspections and helping keep freight rates predictable.
