How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify it’s a substation assembly (transformers, switchgear, relays), stationary or wheel-mounted, and cite NMFC 63140, Class 85 on quotes and the BOL.
  2. For stationary units, bolt to a steel skid or heavy pallet, brace the frame, shield control cabinets and bushings with crates or guards, and mark lift points.
  3. For wheeled units, chock and band wheels, lock axles, and cross-strap to the deck; add a “wheels locked” note on the BOL to prevent movement.
  4. Provide dimensions, weight, and center of gravity; request no‑stack and consider air-ride for sensitive controls; use LTL for compact builds or flatbed for oversize.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing with fixed Class 85, reducing density disputes and reclass fees.
  • Unified coverage for stationary and wheeled designs streamlines carrier bids and tariff negotiations.
  • Non-hazardous status cuts paperwork and avoids hazmat surcharges with most carriers.
  • Damage reduction through skidding/crating best practices lowers claims and job-site delays.
