How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify it’s a substation assembly (transformers, switchgear, relays), stationary or wheel-mounted, and cite NMFC 63140, Class 85 on quotes and the BOL.
- For stationary units, bolt to a steel skid or heavy pallet, brace the frame, shield control cabinets and bushings with crates or guards, and mark lift points.
- For wheeled units, chock and band wheels, lock axles, and cross-strap to the deck; add a “wheels locked” note on the BOL to prevent movement.
- Provide dimensions, weight, and center of gravity; request no‑stack and consider air-ride for sensitive controls; use LTL for compact builds or flatbed for oversize.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 85, reducing density disputes and reclass fees.
- Unified coverage for stationary and wheeled designs streamlines carrier bids and tariff negotiations.
- Non-hazardous status cuts paperwork and avoids hazmat surcharges with most carriers.
- Damage reduction through skidding/crating best practices lowers claims and job-site delays.
