How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Write the BOL as: “Embalming Fluid, NMFC 63590, Class 85, non-hazardous, liquid, packed in boxes.” Include piece count and note “upright only.”
- Use leak-resistant inner jugs with sealed caps, place each in a poly bag with absorbent, then into sturdy corrugated boxes. Cushion voids to prevent cap shear.
- Palletize boxes upright on a 4‑way pallet, add a pallet liner, corner boards, and two bands plus stretch wrap. Mark “This Side Up” and apply orientation arrows.
- If shipping in drums instead of boxes, confirm carrier acceptance and use tight‑head drums with tamper seals. Fixed Class 85 applies, so no density calculation is needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 enables predictable rating across carriers, reducing reclass risk and unexpected invoice adjustments.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and specialized paperwork, lowering total landed cost and admin time.
- Proper inner-pack and palletization minimize leakage claims, protecting margins and avoiding service failures to funeral homes and medical programs.
- Clear NMFC mapping (63590) speeds quoting and onboarding for mortuary suppliers and distributors, accelerating order-to-ship cycles.
