Classification Details
| NMFC | Description | Class |
|---|---|---|
| 63600.00 | Enclosures, Cabinets or Housings, acoustical (sound reducing), business machine, with or without fans, in boxes, subject to Item 170 and having a density in pounds per cubic foot of: | |
| 63600.01 | Less than 4 | 250 |
| 63600.02 | 4 but less than 6 | 150 |
| 63600.03 | 6 or greater | 125 |
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density (lb/ft³) from the boxed unit’s weight and exterior cubic footage; select the correct class among the three density brackets (125-250) and print it on the BOL.
- Pack to Item 170 standards: use a rigid double-wall corrugated box, foam block acoustic panels, cap or secure fan openings, and protect cable ports to prevent vibration damage.
- Palletize boxed units when needed: center the boxes, strap and stretch-wrap, add corner boards, and mark This Side Up to protect internal sound-dampening liners.
- Document clearly: “Enclosure, acoustical, business machine, boxed, NMFC 63600, density __ pcf, subject to Item 170,” and list per-box weight for accurate rating.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate density entry avoids reclass fees and surprise rate increases common with bulky sound-reducing cabinets.
- Optimizing packaging to raise density (less void space, consolidated accessories) can drive a lower class and lower LTL rates.
- Purposeful boxing that protects acoustic liners and fan assemblies reduces damage claims, RMAs, and field service costs.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier choices and removes hazmat surcharges, improving capacity and lowering total landed cost.
