How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print NMFC 63602 and Class 85 on the BOL; describe as “Envelopes, spun-bonded olefin cloth, in boxes” to prevent reclass.
- Use crush-tested corrugated cartons with snug void fill; protect edges so flat-packed envelopes don’t dent or curl in transit.
- For multi-box shipments, palletize on a 48x40 pallet with an interlocking pattern, two straps, and stretch wrap; keep no overhang and stay stackable.
- Separate printed from unprinted by carton and label SKUs clearly—class remains the same, but OS&D checks and counts move faster.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 delivers predictable LTL quotes and reduces surprise reweigh/reclass charges.
- Boxed, stackable freight minimizes damage claims and improves trailer cube, lowering per-unit shipping cost.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and avoids hazmat surcharges, accelerating tender-to-pickup time.
- One class for printed and unprinted SKUs simplifies inventory and mixed loads, cutting handling time and fulfillment complexity.
