How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Mark the BOL as Prepaid and describe the commodity as “Evergreens, Decorative, Cut – NMFC 63650.” Include carton and pallet counts, and add “Protect from Heat/Freeze” when seasonally required.
  2. Use vented, wax-coated corrugated cartons with poly liners or kraft sleeves. For bundled boughs, tie with twine, add absorbent pads for sap and moisture, and prevent any free liquid from escaping.
  3. Build breathable pallets: column-stack cartons with corner boards, use a slip sheet on top, and apply stretch wrap loosely to allow airflow. Avoid overhang and specify Do Not Double Stack if greens are easily crushed.
  4. Time transit to protect freshness: book early-week pickups to prevent weekend dwell, choose faster LTL service during peak holiday weeks, and request Protect-from-Freeze or temperature-controlled service during extreme weather.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Prepaid terms give shippers full control of freight spend, delivering predictable landed costs for florists, garden centers, and event planners.
  • Clear NMFC reference and packaging notes reduce reclass risks and inspection delays, helping avoid surprise fees and keeping seasonal deliveries on schedule.
  • Moisture-safe, crush-resistant packing cuts OS&D claims and preserves appearance and fragrance, protecting sell-through and wholesale margins.
  • Right-sized cartons and tidy pallet cubes improve trailer utilization and can unlock sharper LTL rates or FAK programs for recurring seasonal volumes.
