How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match packaging to form: dry extracts in five‑ply bags inside sturdy boxes or bales; liquids in tight‑head lined drums. Palletize, shrink‑wrap, and add orientation and “Do Not Stack” labels for bag‑in‑box.
- Document accurately: list NMFC 64370, Class 65, packaging type (e.g., dry in boxes or liquid in drums) on the BOL. Attach the SDS and complete hazmat declarations per carrier rules.
- Control leaks and moisture: line boxes for dry tannins to prevent humidity clumping, and use absorbent pads and drum rings for liquids. Request spill pallets or trays when required by site policy.
- Book hazmat‑authorized carriers only. Note special handling such as fragile bagged product or non‑stack instructions, and confirm accessorials for drums (liftgate, residential, or appointment).
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 removes density disputes, giving predictable LTL quotes and reducing costly reclass fees.
- One item covers dry and liquid extracts, simplifying SKU setup, training, and rate management across sites.
- Right‑sized packaging and blocking lower spill risk, cutting cleanup charges, claims, and delivery exceptions.
- Proactive hazmat compliance speeds tendering and pickup, minimizing refusals, fines, and transit delays.
