How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the product form and hazards: chips, powder, or solvent-based extract. Pull the SDS to determine if it ships as a hazardous liquid or as a combustible dust risk.
- Use fit-for-purpose packaging: UN-rated drums for liquids with tight closures and absorbent; poly-lined bags, fiber drums, or sealed cartons for chips and powders to control dust and moisture.
- Palletize securely with no overhang. Stretch-wrap and band, add orientation arrows and HazMat marks/labels as required, and segregate from heat sources, oxidizers, and food loads if solvent odor is present.
- Document clearly on the BOL: NMFC 64400, full commodity description, SDS attached, and HazMat declaration with emergency contact when applicable. Request carrier pre-approval if rating is unclear.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct use of NMFC 64400 minimizes reclass fees and dispute-driven rate adjustments for dye wood and extract shipments.
- HazMat-compliant packaging and paperwork reduce carrier refusals, spill clean-up charges, and transit delays.
- Clear SDS-based descriptions speed up quoting and pickup scheduling, improving on-time performance for mills, tanneries, and labs.
- Unitizing drums or lined cartons on standard 48x40 pallets cuts handling touches and accessorials, protecting margins on LTL moves.
