How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match packaging to form: use UN-rated drums or pails for liquids, fiber drums with poly liners for powders; add absorbent and overpack if there’s spill risk from dye concentrates.
- Declare NMFC 64430 on the BOL and mark as hazardous; attach the SDS and include the 24/7 emergency contact to meet carrier hazmat intake requirements.
- Prevent staining and incompatibilities: line pallets, wrap securely, and segregate away from oxidizers, food items, and light-colored goods during LTL consolidation.
- Even without a published class range, capture dimensions and weight for rating and provide the proper item description so carriers can quote hazmat accessorials accurately.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC usage reduces reclass fees and avoids surprise hazmat surcharges, improving landed cost predictability for dye and colorant shipments.
- Right-sized, UN-rated packaging minimizes spill cleanup charges and claim exposure from highly staining natural extracts.
- Clean, compliant paperwork speeds carrier acceptance and keeps hazmat freight moving, protecting production timelines at tanneries, textile mills, and wood finishers.
- Proper segregation and containment protect other freight, preserving carrier relationships and limiting indirect costs from contamination incidents.
