Notes
Note 64682: NOTE-Includes equipment of heating apparatus which when detached must be in boxes, crates or drums, except that cast iron stoves may be shipped loose.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State the scope on the BOL: “Battery brooders/feeding batteries—steel or steel-and-wire—other than poultry laying cages (see item 64682 for cages).” Clear wording prevents misclassification.
- Ship knocked down when possible. Remove trays and partitions, nest tiers, and bundle frames by level (e.g., “Tier 1 of 6”) to reduce cube and limit abrasion during LTL handling.
- Protect wire ends and edges. Use plastic caps, corner protectors, and corrugated wrap, then band to a pallet without overhang; orient wire panels inward to avoid snagging forklifts.
- Stabilize tall stacks. Cross-strap, add blocking, and mark center of gravity; crate fully for stackable service, or request volume LTL/partial TL when shipping assembled banks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct NMFC targeting minimizes reclass and rebill risk versus mistakenly rating as poultry cages, avoiding surprise charges.
- Knock-down packaging lowers dimensional footprint, cutting LTL costs and reducing damage claims on wire components.
- Standardized pallets or crates speed dock turns, reduce accessorials (non-stackable, rewrap, excessive length), and support predictable transit.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and keeps documentation simple, accelerating quotes and tendering.
