How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle slatted floor panels tightly with corner protectors and edge guards, then band with steel or poly strapping so lath is not crushed under tension.
- Orient bundles so lath runs parallel to pallet deck boards, adding dunnage every 18–24 inches to prevent flexing on longer panels (e.g., 96-inch runs).
- Moisture-manage mixed materials: plastic sheeting plus VCI paper for steel contact points, and a corrugated cap to resist abrasion during LTL handling.
- Because class is not fixed, include precise piece count, bundle dimensions, and total weight on the BOL; add photos if panels are irregular or overlength.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduce reclass risk by citing the exact NMFC item description for mixed wood-and-steel poultry floors, avoiding misidentification as all-wood or all-steel.
- Lower LTL rates by standardizing to 48x40 or 96x40 pallets and increasing density through tight bundling for more favorable pricing tiers.
- Cut damage claims with edge protection and mid-span dunnage that keep steel edges straight and prevent wooden lath cracking during cross-dock moves.
- Speed quoting and pickup approvals by providing density details and clear photos; non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and carrier acceptance.
