How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package the guard as a unitized package: set on sturdy runners or a pallet, strap with steel banding, and shield sides or wings with blocking and edge protectors; e.g., an 8-ft steel guard strapped in two places.
- Print precise NMFC details on the BOL: “NMFC 65390 Livestock Guards, steel, in packages, Class 60,” include piece count, whether wings are attached, and list gross weight and dimensions for carrier handling.
- Plan handling for heavy steel: mark center of gravity, allow 4-way fork entry where possible, keep forks wide to avoid bending cross members, and avoid stacking other steel on top of the guard.
- Confirm delivery needs common to ranch or remote sites: request limited-access service if applicable, verify liftgate capacity before selecting it, or arrange a forklift/loader; check Note, item 65391, for any special conditions.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 provides predictable rating regardless of density, often pricing heavy steel guards more favorably and reducing reweigh/reclass disputes.
- Clear scope—steel or steel-and-wood, with or without sides/wings—minimizes carrier misinterpretation and helps avoid accessorials tied to misclassification.
- “In packages” aligns with palletized/crated handling, speeding cross-dock movement and lowering damage risk on rugged but precision-fit guard components.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and eliminates hazmat fees and paperwork, shortening tender-to-pickup timelines.
