How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 65590, Class 65 on the BOL and note “electric pig warming mats, plastic, boxed” to prevent reclass and speed carrier processing.
- Keep mats flat in their cartons; add corner protection and void fill around coiled cords or controllers so they don’t press against the plastic surface.
- Palletize cartons with no overhang, use a slip sheet and a pallet cap, and limit stack height to what the carton crush rating supports to avoid warping.
- For rural farm deliveries, request liftgate and notify consignee; mark cartons “This Side Up” and avoid prolonged cold that can make plastic brittle.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 65 for boxed, durable plastic equipment delivers competitive LTL rates without density calculations.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat fees and restrictions, simplifying carrier selection and scheduling.
- Clear, single-line classification reduces reclass disputes and accelerates quoting for seasonal piglet nursery rollouts.
- Proper flat-pack palletizing lowers damage from bending and returns, protecting margins during peak farrowing cycles.
