How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL as “Silos, steel, KD, NMFC 65880, Class 70” and note if one silo unloader is included; specify counts of boxes/crates for enameled parts.
- Bundle shell panels and rings on sturdy skids with edge protection; block and strap loose rings to prevent roll. Box or crate enameled parts with foam or corrugate to avoid chipping.
- Arrange handling for long or irregular pieces: use long forks, spreader bars, or pipe clamps. Keep forks off enameled surfaces and label fragile crates clearly.
- Book LTL under Class 70 (no density needed). Choose carriers that accept overlength and non-stack if required, and photograph packaging before tendering.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 removes density disputes, speeding quotes and cutting reclass fees.
- Allowance for one unloader per silo simplifies paperwork and avoids multi-item classing.
- KD configuration lowers cube and improves loadability, often unlocking better LTL rates than assembled units.
- Proper boxing/crating of enameled parts reduces damage claims, keeping projects on schedule and budgets intact.
