How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 66100 and the full description “Staves, cement, silo, grain bin or water tank” on the BOL; note fixed Class 50 and include piece count and bundle dimensions.
- Bundle staves with cardboard or plywood interleaves, edge guards, and steel/plastic banding; place on heavy-duty pallets or A-frame racks with Do Not Stack labeling.
- Center bundles over pallet stringers and block/brace inside the trailer; for flatbed deliveries to farm sites, use wood dunnage and tarps to protect edges from road debris.
- Direct handlers to use wide fork spacing or soft slings; avoid chains contacting edges, and photo-document condition to prevent disputes over chips or cracks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 50 eliminates density checks, speeding up quotes across LTL carriers.
- Lower cost per pound for dense cement components versus misclassified masonry or mixed freight.
- Fewer accessorials and claims by preventing reclass, overlength surprises, and edge-damage through proper bundling.
- Smoother project scheduling for co-ops, ag contractors, and municipal tank work through a simple, consistent NMFC assignment.
