How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose sturdy skids for long troughs. For 4–8 ft galvanized units, use full-length pallets or custom runners so nothing overhangs, then edge-cap and strap in two bands.
- Nest or bundle plastic troughs to save cube. Place corrugated pads between each piece, stretch-wrap tightly, and keep bundle height under 48 inches to prevent crush damage.
- Bag and box loose hardware—legs, hangers, float valves—and secure the carton to the pallet or inside a crate so small parts don’t migrate during LTL handling.
- Ship clean and dry. Remove feed residue, mark the BOL as Agricultural Equipment—Chicken Troughs, list piece count and dimensions, and note Non-Hazardous for smoother processing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct NMFC referencing reduces reclass disputes and unexpected fees when moving poultry equipment through LTL networks.
- Efficient nesting and bundling of troughs cuts freight class exposure tied to size-based charges and lowers per-unit transport cost.
- Damage prevention—edge protection, full-length skids, and secured hardware—reduces claims and keeps farm operations on schedule.
- Clear non-hazardous identification and clean packaging shorten dock time, speeding carrier acceptance and delivery to growers and integrators.
