How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm scope before booking: these are iron or steel feeding or watering troughs/pans without hoppers, racks, storage tanks, or cabinets. If accessories are attached, review items 66192 and 66193.
- Package for metal protection: palletize or crate, add edge guards and V-boards, use separators between nested pans to prevent metal-on-metal abrasion, and band with protective sleeves to avoid scuffs.
- Plan for size and handling: long narrow troughs can attract overlength fees. Declare the exact longest dimension on the BOL and use blocking to prevent bending during forklift moves.
- Write a clear BOL line: “Troughs or Pans, feeding or watering, livestock, iron or steel, NMFC 66190, packaged.” Include piece count, pallet count, and note “no hoppers/racks attached.”
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC usage limits reclass fees and inspection delays by clearly separating bare troughs/pans from outfitted units covered under other items.
- Non-hazardous metal goods streamline terminal handling and avoid hazmat surcharges, improving transit reliability during peak farm seasons.
- Damage reduction through proper banding, edge protection, and nesting lowers claims on coated or galvanized finishes and protects resale value.
- Cost control for long pieces: declaring length up front and consolidating similar sizes on one pallet can reduce special handling and overlength charges.
