How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the unit as one line item: “Vacuum Milk Conveying System on hand truck with steel pails and strainer — NMFC 66230, Class 150, non-hazardous.”
- Secure the steel reservoir to the hand truck with straps, tie plastic hoses to the frame, and cap hose ends to prevent contamination and drips.
- Bag and band loose accessories (steel pails, strainer, tank-attachment unit) to the hand truck or place in a labeled crate on the same pallet to avoid loss.
- Palletize the entire assembly, protect fittings with foam or corner boards, and note the center of gravity so carriers can handle the unit upright.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 150 simplifies rating and reduces reclass risks versus density-based items, giving more predictable LTL quotes.
- Non-hazardous status speeds tendering and minimizes accessorial delays tied to special handling or paperwork.
- Clear inclusion of accessories under one NMFC item helps avoid split shipments and accessory mischarges.
- Proper prep (caps, strapping, palletizing) lowers damage potential to hoses and fittings, reducing claims and downtime for dairy operations.
