How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure outer dimensions after packing (L×W×H). Include pallet height and any overhang, since class under NMFC 66250 is set by dimensions.
- Choose packaging by build: box lighter poly or sheet-steel bowls; crate and block heavy cast-iron or concrete waterers. Strap to a pallet to prevent tipping.
- Remove float/automatic water check parts and bag hardware. Cap inlets, drain tanks completely, and pad protruding fittings with foam or edge protectors.
- Mark orientation and fragile valve zones. Example: a 24×18×16 boxed bowl stays compact, while a 60-inch trough ships best in a braced wood crate.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Right-size packaging to target a lower bracket within Class 65–200, reducing LTL charges tied to dimensional space.
- Damage prevention around floats, valves, and check assemblies cuts claim risk and replacement delays at the farm.
- Accurate final dimensions eliminate reclass/rebill surprises, stabilizing freight quotes and improving carrier acceptance.
- Non-hazardous classification broadens carrier options and speeds scheduling, keeping installations on timeline during peak seasons.
