How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the shipment fits NMFC 66290 and Note item 66292: a combined steel trough-and-tank assembly, with or without integrated fireboxes or heaters, packed as a single unit.
- Use heavy corrugated boxes or robust packaged bundles on a pallet; strap and block to prevent flexing of long sides and protect rims, ports, and drain fittings.
- If a heater or firebox is present, cap threaded openings, add foam or corrugated guards around housings, and mark the face as ‘Do Not Top Load’ to prevent crush damage.
- On the BOL, list NMFC 66290, Class 200, piece count, and whether a heater/firebox is included to avoid reclass and speed up LTL rating.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 200 means no density math—faster quoting and fewer billing surprises.
- One item covers units with or without heaters, reducing misclassification risk and reweigh/reclass fees.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines tendering and broadens carrier acceptance in agricultural lanes.
- Proper packaged presentation (boxed/palletized) cuts OS&D risk on long, rigid steel forms, lowering claims and downtime in farm operations.
