How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose sturdy double‑wall boxes or wooden crates sized to the waterer; pad lids and edges with corrugate, and bag small hardware to prevent loss.
- If drum‑packed, ensure clean, dry interiors; wrap steel surfaces to stop metal‑on‑metal abrasion and secure with blocking so units cannot roll.
- Palletize with no overhang, add corner posts and two steel or poly bands; mark orientation arrows and keep center of gravity centered.
- List model numbers and counts on the BOL and note “Steel poultry waterers — boxed/crated (NMFC 66370)” to align with carrier classification.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Clear NMFC reference reduces reclass disputes and surprise fees versus generic “metal parts” descriptions.
- Non‑haz status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, helping keep LTL rates competitive.
- Consistent box/crate/drum packaging lowers denting and scuff claims, cutting replacement costs and farm downtime.
- Predictable item naming streamlines quotes for co‑ops, integrators, and ag retailers, speeding procurement and replenishment.
