How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print NMFC 67040 and Class 85 on the BOL and note: “Prepared, NOI, frozen, in packages” to match the tariff wording.
- Pack feed in leak-resistant cartons or lined bags inside sturdy boxes; use poly liners and absorbent pads to contain any thaw condensation.
- Maintain freeze with reefer LTL or insulated shippers plus gel packs or eutectic plates; if using dry ice, declare it as hazmat to avoid penalties.
- Palletize on 48x40 with no overhang; use corner boards, tight stretch wrap, a top cap, and ‘Keep Frozen/Temperature Sensitive’ labels and indicators.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 rating simplifies quoting and avoids density disputes for predictable LTL costs.
- Non-hazardous commodity reduces accessorial risk; choosing gel packs over dry ice can prevent hazmat surcharges.
- Accurate NMFC 67040 labeling and sturdy packaging lower reclass and damage claims tied to leakage or partial thaw.
- Cold-chain planning with reefer partners or insulated systems protects product integrity and minimizes spoilage write-offs.
