Notes

Note 67091: NOTE-Does not apply on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as hazardous and required to bear a Hazard Class or Hazard Division label or placard. For classes applicable to such hazardous materials, see provisions elsewhere in this Classification.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Select approved packaging by product: sift-proof bags for meals, sturdy boxes for pet food, tight-head drums for final molasses, or pails as allowed by Packages 1000/1271/1500/2257/2330/2421.
  2. Calculate density per NMFC Item 170: cubic feet = (L×W×H in)/1728; density = total weight ÷ cubic feet. Heavier, tighter packs generally earn a lower class.
  3. Control moisture and leaks: line bags where humidity is a risk, use sealed drums with bung closures for viscous materials, and add absorbent pads and pallet trays to prevent claimable seepage.
  4. Palletize for stability: interlock 40×48 patterns, use corner boards and stretch wrap, top-sheet dusty products, and mark each unit with product type and “Animal Feed—Non-Hazardous.”

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-driven pricing: compact stacking and right-size pallets improve pounds-per-cubic-foot, typically reducing freight class and total LTL spend.
  • Recognized packaging reduces reclass risk: using NMFC-listed bags, boxes, drums, and pails helps avoid inspections, delays, and administrative fees.
  • Cleaner, sealed loads cut claims: leak- and moisture-proofing minimizes contamination, cleanup charges, and OS&D disputes for meal, pulp, or molasses-based items.
  • Predictable quoting: standard counts (e.g., 40×50 lb bags per pallet) and clear non-hazardous status speed rate approvals and broaden carrier acceptance.
