How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State the density on the BOL per Item 170: weigh the shipment and compute cube. Example: 1,050 lb on a 48x40x36 in pallet → 40.0 cu ft → 26.3 pcf.
- Stabilize packages. For bales, keep twine/straps intact, add corner boards, and stretch wrap to contain chaff. For boxes, use double‑wall cartons and band to the pallet.
- Control moisture. Keep hay dry and under typical feed moisture targets to prevent mold; line pallets with slip sheets and avoid loading in damp trailers.
- Use precise descriptions for faster rating: Hay, in bales or boxes, NMFC 67260, density __ pcf, Item 170. Add keep dry and stackability notes to prevent accessorial surprises.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Right-sized density class reduces reclass and reweigh fees, improving invoice accuracy and cash flow.
- Tighter pack raises pcf and can qualify for lower freight classes, cutting per‑cwt LTL rates.
- Non-hazardous designation streamlines paperwork and avoids hazmat surcharges or carrier restrictions.
- Clean, contained packaging lowers OS&D risk and sweeping charges, protecting margins on feed shipments.
