How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Mark your BOL as “Landscape Edging, Wood/Wire — NMFC 68015, Class 70” and include the packaging type (e.g., 8 boxes on one skid) for clean rating and billing.
- Boxed product: use double‑wall cartons with edge protectors so wire doesn’t dent the box, cap sharp wire ends, and add a moisture barrier to protect the wood.
- Skid or pallet loads: bundle sections tightly, stagger joints, and use two crosswise straps plus stretch wrap; avoid overhang so the wire doesn’t snag other freight.
- Ship to job sites or garden centers with “Keep Flat/Do Not Stack” labeling when boards are long; this prevents bowing or staple pull‑through during transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Single fixed Class 70 rating simplifies quoting and helps prevent costly reclassification or inspection delays.
- Non‑hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and streamlines terminal handling for faster pickups and deliveries.
- Proper boxing or palletizing reduces damage and claim exposure on mixed wood/wire goods, protecting margin on seasonal installs.
- Clear NMFC identification on paperwork speeds audits and improves rate accuracy across carriers and TMS platforms.
