How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose sturdy packaging for solids—multiwall bags, fiber drums, or lined cartons. For fine meals or dry sludge, add inner liners to control dust and odor.
- Palletize tight with interlocked stacks, full stretch-wrap, and top sheets. Add edge guards and banding so horn or hoof fragments can’t puncture nearby freight.
- Mark clearly: list “NMFC 68100, Class 50” on the BOL, attach an SDS if available, and apply required hazardous labels. Segregate away from food and pharma.
- Manage moisture and leakage. Keep tung oil cake/meal dry to reduce caking or self-heating; place absorbent pads or trays under pallets if residue is possible.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower LTL spend with a flat Class 50 suited to dense, packaged residues like felt scrap, horn waste, and dry sludge.
- One NMFC for varied fertilizer-only materials simplifies quoting and billing, cutting reclass disputes and accessorial surprises.
- Compliant hazard marking and segregation prevent regulatory holds and fines, protecting transit times and delivery promises.
- Clean, odor-controlled packaging reduces handling refusals and OS&D claims, improving carrier acceptance and long-term rates.
