How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote and tender under NMFC 68120 at Class 50; note “Fertilizer—Raw Bone Meal” on the BOL to avoid density-based reclass.
- Use heavy-duty, poly-lined bags or tight-seal drums on 48x40 pallets; band and stretch-wrap with a cap sheet, and limit stack height to prevent bag rupture and dust release.
- Provide the SDS reflecting ammonia content and include a 24/7 emergency contact when required; request segregation from foodstuffs and odor-sensitive freight.
- Keep product dry—schedule covered loading, choose dry vans, and add pallet liners; consult the SDS for incompatible materials and instruct the carrier accordingly.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 rating delivers bulk-friendly LTL pricing, lowering cost per hundredweight for bagged or drum-packed fertilizer.
- Simple, fixed classification reduces reclass risk and billing disputes, speeding quotes and stabilizing budgets.
- Well-contained bags or drums cut spill, dust, and contamination claims, improving delivery acceptance and customer satisfaction.
- Proactive hazmat documentation and labeling increase carrier acceptance and prevent delays, penalties, or tender rejection.
