How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm scope and hazards first: review the SDS and Note, item 68144 to verify the fertilizer compound qualifies as NOI and capture the proper shipping name and UN/NA data if regulated.
  2. Compute density to pick the correct class: weigh the shipment and measure the outside dimensions of each box (or total cube if overpacked/palletized). Match the result to one of four density brackets to land between Class 50 and 110 (e.g., 900 lb over 30 ft³ ≈ 30 lb/ft³).
  3. Package for containment and moisture control: use sturdy, sealed corrugated boxes or tight packages with liners to prevent leaks and caking. Secure closures and protect corners to avoid rupture under compression.
  4. Ship hazmat-ready: book with LTL carriers that accept hazardous materials, provide a 24/7 emergency contact on the BOL, apply required marks/labels per the SDS, and anticipate a hazmat surcharge and potential handling restrictions.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Optimized density can push freight into lower classes near 50, materially reducing LTL rates on bulk fertilizer moves.
  • Using rigid boxes/packages minimizes spill risk and claims, protecting margins and customer relationships.
  • Clean hazmat documentation prevents carrier refusals, rework, and reclassification charges that inflate total landed cost.
  • Clear NMFC 68140 usage (with Note 68144 reference) speeds rating across carriers, shortening quote cycles and improving scheduling reliability.
