How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm eligibility: use 68310 only for Fibers, NOI per Note 68311; if your fiber has a dedicated NMFC, use that item instead.
- Compute density in lb/ft³ for each handling unit. Weigh, measure volume, then map to the 13-tier scale (Classes 50–400). Compacted bales typically rate lower than loose bagged fibers.
- Select containment that fits the material: lined boxes to prevent sifting, sealed or woven bags for loose fibers, and tight bale wiring with edge protectors; stretch-wrap to control shedding.
- Document precisely on the BOL: write NMFC 68310, chosen class, package type (bags/bales/boxes), piece count, and actual weight. Be prepared to note compliance with Item 170 packaging rules.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower freight spend by densifying: compress bales or right-size boxes to increase lb/ft³ and move toward lower classes, improving LTL rates.
- Reduce reclass and reweigh fees through accurate density calculation and clear package identification, speeding up carrier billing and dispute resolution.
- Standardize quoting across mixed fiber types under one NOI item, simplifying TMS setup and tariff negotiations with consistent class logic.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and eliminates hazmat surcharges, easing consolidation and improving network flexibility.
