Note 69101: NOTE-Does not apply on commercial laundry lint collectors or filters as named in item 124235.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm density per handling unit. Weigh the packed box or crate and measure its exterior size to get PCF; e.g., 180 lb on 48x40x30 in ≈ 4.5 PCF.
  2. Match the right note item when applicable. Engine or compressor elements may reference 69102, pool filters/skimmers 69103; list the correct NMFC note on the BOL.
  3. Protect delicate media from crush and moisture. Bag coffee filters or cellulose discs, use double‑wall cartons, and block/bracing inside crates for concrete filter assemblies.
  4. Keep low‑density paper media separate from heavy cartridges or concrete units. Use distinct pallets and BOL lines so each density-based class is applied correctly.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Reduce freight spend by increasing pack density where possible, lowering the density-based class for many filter products.
  • Avoid reclass and inspection fees by citing NMFC 69100 and relevant notes (69101–69103) and by documenting weight and cube on the BOL.
  • Cut damage-related costs with proper boxing or crating that protects pleats, discs, and brittle housings, resulting in fewer claims and returns.
  • Broaden carrier options and speed tendering since this commodity is non-hazardous and ships readily in boxes, crates, or packages.
