How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm each extinguisher is not charged: gauge at zero, valve pin installed, and any propellant cartridges removed or declared empty per the manufacturer.
- Choose packaging that fits the unit: heavy steel cylinders often need wood crates with blocking; smaller canisters ride safely in double-wall boxes with valve and hose guards.
- Palletize multiple boxes in an interlocked pattern, add corner boards, strap and stretch-wrap; keep crates centered on the pallet with no overhang and label This Side Up.
- On the BOL, list NMFC 69190, indicate box or crate, note “Not Charged” and “Non-Hazardous,” and reference any applicable notes (items 69186 and 69191) if required.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Avoid hazmat surcharges: uncharged, non-hazardous status lowers total landed cost for LTL moves.
- Correct NMFC 69190 on paperwork reduces reclass fees, inspection delays, and billing disputes at the terminal.
- Selecting the right packaging (box vs crate) aligns with the proper subclass in the 85–150 range, balancing damage prevention with competitive rates.
- Item-based rating simplifies quoting and auditing, helping finance and logistics teams predict costs without density calculations.
