How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 69200, “Brass Fire Extinguisher Shells,” and Class 85 on the BOL to avoid reclass fees and speed up rating.
- Use sturdy boxes or wood crates with interior dividers or VCI wrap to prevent brass scuffing, dents, and tarnish during LTL handling.
- Palletize evenly and band crates; add corner protectors and clear “Empty Shells—Non‑Pressurized” labels to prevent hazmat confusion at terminals.
- If nesting shells, add foam or cardboard interleafs to stop metal-on-metal contact, and fill voids to keep shells from shifting in transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting and auditing, reducing surprise adjustments from density-based reclassifications.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat surcharges and special paperwork, cutting total landed cost.
- Damage-resistant crating lowers scrap and rework on precision brass parts, improving yield and customer satisfaction.
- Consistent NMFC usage speeds carrier inspections and claims, helping maintain favorable LTL tariffs and on-time departures.
