How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Detail the exact item on the BOL: electric fireplace insert, mantel, glass doors, or log set, plus materials (steel, cast iron, MDF, tempered glass) and assembled vs. knocked-down.
- Package fragile parts first. Crate glass doors with edge protection, foam, and rigid faces; strap crates or cartons to a pallet with no overhang and mark center of gravity.
- For heavy hearths and surrounds, use blocking and corner protectors, then stretch wrap and banding. Add “Do Not Stack” cones if the top surface is finished.
- Request a quote noting NMFC 69310 and class N/A, and list accessorials like residential, liftgate, or appointment delivery—common for remodel jobs and homeowner shipments.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduce reclass fees by citing the correct NMFC ID and giving precise materials and packaging details carriers need to rate accurately.
- Lower damage and claims on fragile glass and finished wood by using crate-and-pallet methods tailored to fireplace components.
- Control final-mile costs with the right accessorials up front, preventing redelivery, storage, and appointment penalties.
- Consolidate accessories with the main unit on a single pallet when possible to cut handling touches and improve freight rates.
