How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use watertight, leakproof packaging: lined 55-gal drums, sealed IBC totes, or heavy poly-lined bins. Band to pallets and add absorbent pads to capture seepage.
- State the description clearly on the BOL: “Fish Scrap, NOI, green,” note Non-hazardous, and reference NMFC 69970. Add remarks like Leakproof Packaging and Do Not Stack if applicable.
- Plan fast transit and avoid weekend dwell. In warm weather, consider chilled service or gel packs to curb odor and spoilage risk for wet by-product.
- Separate from odor-sensitive freight such as paper or textiles. Request floor protection, carry spill kits, and notify the carrier of possible residue at pickup.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat fees and simplifies carrier acceptance for by-product loads.
- Single NOI entry streamlines rating and reduces reclass disputes, helping prevent surprise invoices and inspection charges.
- Proper leakproof packaging cuts spill cleanup costs, minimizes claims, and keeps deliveries on schedule.
- Using high-cube totes or efficiently packed drums improves handling and can lower LTL rates per pound.
