How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match the float type to the right subclass: molded plastic bobbers, expanded foam donuts, or cork lifeline floats each rate differently under NMFC 70260.
- Bag loose pieces, fill voids with kraft or air pillows, and box in double-wall cartons; avoid compression that can flatten foam or crack rigid plastics.
- Palletize tight with no overhang, add corner posts and a top sheet, then strap lightly and label Do Not Crush for safer LTL handling.
- List exact piece counts and outer carton dimensions on the BOL so carriers plan cube correctly and avoid unexpected minimum charge rules.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate subclass selection within the 85–300 range prevents over-classing and lowers LTL rates for bulky, lightweight floats.
- Robust boxing and gentle unitization cut damage claims on crush-prone foam or cork components, protecting margin.
- Non-hazardous classification speeds tendering and avoids hazmat surcharges, simplifying multi-carrier routing.
- Uniform boxed packs stack efficiently on pallets, reducing handling time and improving dock throughput during peak seasons.
