How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 70265, Class 70 on quotes and the BOL; describe the goods as reinforced concrete floats/pontoons to avoid reclass.
- Choose mode by module size: smaller sections within LTL limits ship at Class 70; larger units move best on flatbed or step-deck with crane appointments.
- Build timber cradles and spread dunnage lengthwise; band to skids or frames, never directly to the concrete. Pad edges and cap embedded hardware.
- Mark lifting points and center of gravity. Request lift assistance (spreader bar/nylon slings) and schedule marina or dock delivery appointments to prevent delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies quoting and budgeting—no density math, fewer reclass risks, faster approvals.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat paperwork and surcharges, lowering total landed cost.
- Proper cradling and edge protection cut damage claims and avoid costly project delays at docks and marinas.
- Right mode and equipment (flatbed with crane vs. LTL) reduces accessorials like detention, limited access, and rehandling.
