How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle non-wheeled cultivators with tip guards over tines, then band handles together using edge protectors to prevent strap bite.
- Choose sturdy cartons or fiberboard sleeves for single picks; palletize bulk bundles with no overhang and shrink-wrap tightly for field-to-warehouse moves.
- List materials and count on the BOL (e.g., 10 steel-tine cultivators, hardwood handles) and note “non-wheeled hand implements” to match the NMFC scope.
- Remove soil and moisture, apply rust inhibitor on metal tines, and add corrugated dividers so tines cannot pierce adjacent freight.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Non-hazardous tools reduce accessorials and avoid hazmat surcharges, keeping LTL costs predictable.
- Right-size bundles and pallet footprints improve trailer stackability, lowering cubic exposure and improving rates.
- Clear NMFC alignment (“cultivators, not wheeled”) helps prevent reclass fees and inspection delays at terminals.
- Damage reduction from tip protection and edge boards cuts claims expense and keeps farm retailers stocked in season.
