How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Stabilize rolling parts: chock the wheels and use two crossed straps over the frame or axle so the cultivator can’t move on a pallet.
- Guard the tines and blades with tip protectors or thick corrugated pads, then stretch-wrap and band to prevent punctures into neighboring freight.
- Pick the right pack: single unit on a 48x40 pallet for LTL, or a wood crate for mixed terminals; ship knocked-down when possible to reduce cube.
- Document details on the BOL: assembled or KD, overall dimensions, weight, wheel width, and photos. This speeds quotes and avoids reclass delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Damage control through wheel chocks and tine guards cuts claims and keeps farm deliveries on schedule.
- Knocked-down packing lowers density-driven costs by reducing cube, improving LTL rate eligibility.
- Proper blocking and crating minimizes rework or recoop fees at cross-docks, protecting margins.
- Clear specs for a Class N/A item prevent reclass disputes and accelerate carrier approvals.
