How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Fit each cutter with a blade sheath or tip guard, bundle 3–6 together to prevent shifting, and pack in corrugated cartons with dividers and void fill.
  2. Mark cartons “Weed Cutters – Hand Tools.” Put NMFC 8040 and Class 85 on the BOL, and select “packages” as the packaging type when quoting.
  3. Palletize cartons on 48x40 or 48x42 pallets, keep handles oriented inward, add edge boards, strap and stretch-wrap; keep stack height under 60 inches.
  4. Aim for manageable carton weights (35–50 lb). Example: 24 cutters with sheaths in a double‑wall 51 ECT box to resist punctures from blade edges.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable Class 85 rating speeds rate shopping and eliminates density calculations, lowering reclass risk.
  • Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat paperwork and fees, opening access to more carrier options.
  • Damage reduction through blade guards and sturdy cartons cuts OS&D claims and post‑delivery costs.
  • Group alignment with other hand ag implements simplifies SKU consolidation and improves pallet efficiency.
