How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm your product is not tile or molding; if it is, review Note item 70951 and use the correct NMFC instead.
- For wrapped rolls (vinyl, linoleum, wallpaper), use a rigid core with end caps, wrap in poly and kraft, and secure upright on a 4-way pallet with “Do Not Stack” if crush risk exists.
- For boxed planks or cartons, cap edges with corner guards, keep cartons under manageable weights, and interlock layers on pallets to prevent shifting in LTL transit.
- Measure each handling unit carefully; declare any length over 96 inches to avoid unexpected length surcharges and ensure carriers plan proper handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Proper use of NMFC 70950 reduces reclass fees and shortens quote turnaround for flooring and wallcovering shipments.
- Damage mitigation (cores, edge guards, moisture protection) cuts claims, preserving margins and customer satisfaction on finish materials.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and helps secure competitive LTL rates without hazmat fees.
- Optimized palletization of boxes or rolls improves cubic efficiency and minimizes accessorials tied to long or unstable freight.
