Notes
Note 70966: NOTE-Articles tendered for shipment on lift truck skids, pallets or platforms must be securely fastened to and must not overhang the edges of the lift truck skid, pallet or platform deck. Exposed surfaces and edges must be protected by packing forms or other packaging materials so as to withstand the normal rigors of the less-than-truckload environment.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- For roll goods, use sturdy cores and edge protectors, then strap rolls to a pallet to prevent telescoping and flattening during LTL handling.
- Stack rubber tiles flat, interleave with slip sheets to avoid surface imprinting, and shrink-wrap tightly so there’s no overhang beyond the pallet deck.
- Keep products away from hot truck floors and engine walls; add a plastic barrier or corrugate liner to limit odor transfer and scuffing on finished faces.
- List “Rubber floor mats/matting or tiles – NMFC 70965” on the BOL, include piece count (rolls or cartons), and note pallet count for clear dock routing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC 70965 descriptions reduce reclass fees and speed carrier approval for non-hazardous floor coverings.
- Right-size packaging (rolls vs. palletized tiles) improves cube utilization and can lower LTL freight rates on lane bids.
- Damage mitigation—edge guards, slip sheets, and tight wrap—cuts claim risk and preserves sellable surface finish.
- Clear labeling and unitized loads increase cross-dock throughput, trimming detention and accessorial delays.
