How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density accurately: weigh the packaged shipment and measure pallet length, width, and height. Example: 48x40x36 in at 600 lb = 40.0 cu ft and 15 pcf.
- Package for the journey: roll matting on rigid cores with end protection, stretch-wrap and strap to a pallet; carton flat mats with edge guards and avoid pallet overhang.
- Meet Item 170 expectations: protect surfaces from abrasion and moisture, cap roll ends to prevent telescoping, and use corner boards so straps don’t crush edges.
- Detail the BOL: list materials and packaging (e.g., “rubber floor mats, rolled, packaged on pallet”) and include weight and cube so carriers assign the correct density class.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower cost through density optimization—tight rolling, nesting, and right-size pallets reduce cube and can qualify for a lower freight class.
- Fewer reclasses and damage fees by packaging to Item 170, which curbs inspections, delays, and claim exposure for heavy rubber or textile matting.
- Non-hazardous commodity broadens carrier options and simplifies tendering, improving service levels and rate shopping across LTL networks.
- Reliable quoting and contract negotiations by tying rates to a clear NMFC and verifiable density, keeping spend predictable across seasonal mat shipments.
