How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Mark the BOL with NMFC 71265, Class 85. Pack dormant peony roots in sturdy boxes or rigid crates with breathable liners to keep contents dry and clean.
- Palletize cartons or crates using slip sheets and corner boards; cap at a stable height (around 48–60 in) to prevent crush and maintain stackability in LTL.
- Use an absorbent medium (peat or coir) around roots inside inner bags, then place those bags into boxes or vented crates. Add “Do Not Freeze” and “Avoid Heat” labels in shoulder seasons.
- For interstate nursery shipments, include any required nursery stock certificates and choose transit times of 2–3 days to minimize moisture buildup or premature sprouting.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 delivers predictable LTL quotes and reduces reclass surprises, improving margin control for growers and distributors.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, lowering total landed cost.
- Box/crate packaging improves cube utilization and safe stacking, enabling economical consolidation from field digs to regional hubs.
- Clear NMFC alignment accelerates claims resolution and minimizes inspection delays during peak nursery shipping seasons.
