How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. List NMFC 71460 and Class 125 on the BOL and specify packaging as boxes; example: “24 boxes of nested plastic flowerpots; 10 boxes peat compound.”
  2. For pots, nest by size and add corrugated dividers or foam corners; fill voids with kraft to prevent crush and rim chipping during LTL transfers.
  3. Line fertilizer and peat boxes with poly bags to stop sifting and moisture; seal seams with reinforced tape and mark “Keep Dry.”
  4. Palletize with heavier fertilizer/peat boxes on the bottom, pots on top; use corner boards, two straps, and full stretch wrap with a top sheet.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 125 eliminates density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing reclass disputes.
  • Single NMFC for boxed horticulture goods simplifies documentation when shipping mixed SKUs (pots plus peat/fertilizer).
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids HazMat fees, improving route flexibility.
  • Stronger boxing and smart pallet builds cut breakage and leakage, lowering claims and protecting margins.
