How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare hazardous materials on the BOL and list NMFC 71697, Class 77.5. State “pepper spray foggers in boxes” to avoid reclass or refused pickup.
- Pack canisters in sturdy cartons with inner dividers so units cannot actuate. Lock safety caps or trigger guards and keep holsters or cases from rubbing valves.
- Palletize away from heat and ignition sources. Keep aerosols off top layers and use corner boards and stretch wrap that secures without crushing.
- Use ground LTL and verify DOT and carrier rules for aerosols and state limits on self-defense sprays. Request hazmat service and plan for surcharges.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 77.5 delivers consistent rating and cleaner quotes, reducing reclass disputes and rebills.
- Accurate hazmat declaration cuts penalties, refused pickups, and terminal delays for time-sensitive orders.
- Boxed-only spec simplifies packing lines and lowers damage and leak claims, protecting margin.
- Improved carrier acceptance and predictable transit boost in-stock rates for retail and public safety channels.
