Note 72002: NOTE-Unless otherwise specified in individual items, provisions apply only on foodstuffs, beverages or beverage preparations, other than frozen.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm your product is an edible good not otherwise named, then check related items 72002, 72004, 72005, 72007, and 72008 to ensure this group applies.
- Detail contents on the BOL: e.g., “beverage preparation—non‑alcoholic syrup, 12 pails,” include net weights, condition (shelf‑stable or refrigerated), and any handling notes.
- Use leak‑resistant, food‑safe packaging (sealed liners in pails, poly‑bagged powders, tight cartons). Add dividers for glass and stretch‑wrap with corner protection to prevent shifts.
- Palletize uniformly and mark special care: Keep Dry, Do Not Freeze, or This Side Up. Photograph final loads to document condition and packing integrity.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduces reclass and inspection risk by correctly applying the group when items aren’t named elsewhere.
- Speeds quoting for mixed SKUs of edible goods, enabling consolidated LTL moves and more predictable freight rates.
- Mitigates spill cleanup fees and OS&D claims through clear labeling and leak‑secure packaging standards.
- Supports retailer and distributor routing requirements, improving dock turnaround and protecting brand reputation.
